The majority of the water used in Littleton comes from surface water sources that are under the stewardship of the Denver Water system. This includes the water from the South Platte River, as well as several creeks and a number of reservoirs, which can be found in the immediate and more distant surroundings. Chatfield Reservoir's higher-than-usual water level results from more than just one condition. Chief among them is the applicable rule of physics: that snow and rain falling on the mountains surrounding the reservoir must eventually flow into it. Almost half of the water that pours into the Chatfield comes down as snow, and the amount of that white stuff has been going up in recent years—by a 2023 estimate, 30 percent of the normal volume of water coming to the Chatfield each year. And the inflow’s only going up.

In general, it is safe to drink tap water in Colorado, even in Littleton. The scarcity and the allocation of water are the center of Colorado's water problem.
