Eco-friendly Plumbing Federal Heights

An unintentional or non-standard ensemble of pipes and fittings—known as feral plumbing—often arises from unauthorized alterations and do-it-yourself projects. Most of the elements that make up the practice of eco plumbing either "pay for themselves" in reduced utility bills or, because of the use of modern water and energy-saving devices, reduce utility bills in ways that are almost immediately noticeable.

A bell trap is a type of plumbing trap used to prevent sewer gas from entering a building while allowing wastewater to flow out. A bell trap is an obsolete design not commonly found in modern plumbing systems. Its use is discouraged because bell traps have a tendency to clog and are difficult to clean. Current plumbing codes in some places may not even allow their use. However, because they were used in some older plumbing systems, they might still be found in some older buildings. If you do encounter one, it's best to replace it with a more modern plumbing trap that is efficient, environmentally friendly, and doesn't have a maintenance issue.

A ferrule is a small, round component, either made of metal or plastic, that is frequently used in the plumbing trade. Ferrules are typically found in compression fittings and are used to make watertight seals (that is, seals that contain water and prevent leaks) between two pipes or within pipe fittings. Ferrules are often overlooked, but they are used in many plumbing applications. Without them, many more plumbing systems would be prone to leaks.

Although bell traps are not prohibited in Federal Heights, using them in new plumbing installations is not advised. The reason? Bell traps are infamous for two things: their tendency to clog and their proclivity to harbor bacteria (and even viruses, in some cases). The potential health risk that these two characteristics create is the direct and most compelling reason to avoid using bell traps. So, too, should our pursuit of ecological plumbing and ESG-friendly architecture make avoiding bell traps a best practice.

What most people know as a P-trap is a device that stops sewer gases from entering a building through the drain pipes. Picture a U-shaped bend in the drain pipe. When the water goes down the drain, it leaves enough behind in the bend to create a seal, a barrier, if you will, against any kind of odor or gas. The really nice thing about a P-trap is that it's the simplest way to make sure sewer gases don't come back up through the drains. And another "really nice thing" is that it helps to conserve water.

An eco-friendly plumbing culvert trap allows for drainage but keeps everything else out—debris, pollutants, and even animals that could otherwise compromise the drainage system. A culvert trap is usually installed at the inlet or outlet of a culvert. In Federal Heights, eco-friendly plumbing features like this are part of an overall sustainable design that also incorporates, among other things, local vegetation adapted to the area's soil and climate, rainwater harvesting, permeable paving, and basins that manage stormwater runoff.

In the U.S., trapping has been, or is, banned, in whole or part, by at least six states, including California, Colorado, and Florida. Colorado's Wildlife Commission has declared some areas in that state off-limits for trapping to protect certain endangered or threatened species. Meanwhile, Washington state has banned some specific trapping methods. All of these states and others that might place restrictions on trapping require, by law, that such methods of catching animals be done humanely, with as little suffering to the animal as possible.

Many places, including Federal Heights, do not allow bell traps. That is because they are not effective and can even be a little dangerous. They are not effective because they do not prevent sewer gases from entering the building, and they are dangerous because, if they can easily clog (as they do), then you can have some pretty serious plumbing issues that can lead to environmental concerns. More modern, effective, and safer designs for plumbing traps, like the P-trap, have been in use for many decades.

Eco-friendly plumbing in Federal Heights has nothing to do with primitive trapping. Water Smart. However, in going with the flow of legality and plumbing, we need to first address the elephant (or animal) in the primitive trapping room: whether it's legal in the US and, more importantly, why it is often considered illegal. US animal welfare laws, and especially state laws, are generally quite favorable to the humans and animals involved, covering a wide range of plumbing traps, animal husbandry, hunting, and fishing. Like eco-agriculture, eco-friendly hunting and fishing are supposed to be the models for trophic cascades—reasons why we shouldn't domesticate (e.g., with plumbing traps) or otherwise greatly impact (e.g., by fishing) the ecosystems of wild animals.
